On the whole, ROCKSTAR does not live up to the confidence and expectations from the otherwise very skilled and accomplished film-maker Imtiaz Ali. The film suffers immensely due to a disorderly screenplay, especially in its post-interval portions. However, the silver lining or the comforting prospect is the virtuoso performance by Ranbir Kapoor and the captivating score by A.R. Rahman, which justify that one extra star.

Ranbir Kapoor displays an amazing growth chart as a performer as he gradually changes from a two-sizes-too-tight jean-clad upstart to a musical genius seared by a love that threatens to scorch his very soul. Nargis Fakhri too stands tall as the delectable Heer who sizzles on screen with her unconventional ways. But eventually, the film is a milestone in Ranbir Kapoor's career as an actor and a classic cut from the AR Rahman and Mohit Chauhan combo. Shammi Kapoor's presence as the classical artist enhances the gravitas of the film.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: Power-packed performances especially Ranbir Kapoor for whom this movie will surely prove to be milestone, hilarious and some intense dialogues, cinematography and music are the strengths. Totally clattered post interval sequences, non-crisp editing and screenplay are the drawbacks.

Overall, Rockstar is a one-time watch and worth a treat for both fans and non-fans of Ranbir Kapoor who does justice to his character at every moment in the film.

Ra.One final verdict - HIT or FLOP?

"A film is a box office hit if it recovers all its investment through its theatrical nett collections and additionally makes good amount of profits. If it does not make high profits but at least recovers its investment, it is termed average. If it cannot even recover its investment, it is labelled a flop."

So let us go to the budget of Ra.One first. Before the release BoxOfficeIndia said Ra.One's final investment is 175 crore rupees.

In the sense, for the film to be an average, it must nett (not gross) 175 crores in collections. To be a hit, it must achieve considerable profits after recovering its investment of 175 crores.

What took me by surprise is BoxOfficeIndia declaring the film a hit even before it recovered its investment. The film made about 100 crore nett until now (it crashed drastically after the the first extended weekend). So I suspected bias and went to another trade analyst, Komal Nahta.

Mr.Nahta said the film is NOT a hit though it recovered its investment (but he also counted TV, satellite rights and subsidy given to the film in the collections, which is not the way it is done). As in, a movie's box office fate is ONLY decided by its theatrical collections, not its TV rights or anything else (If that was the case, almost every movie recovers its investment through satellite rights but they are not called successful or hits).

BoxOfficeKings labelled it as a flop.

Another trade site IBOSNetwork declared the film a flop and said "The distributors are set to suffer heavy losses."

Why such ambiguity in reporting the box office status of the film? How did Box office India declare the movie a hit even before it recovered its money? How did Mr.Nahta include satellite rights in the film's recovery? Finally, how can it be a hit when the distributors are suffering heavy losses?

My personal note on this - The film had a great start thanks to the fantastic publicity drive and record number of prints along with increased ticket prices due to 3D. But negative word of mouth and negative reviews immediately took the film's collections down in the weekdays and it doesn't stand a chance in recovering its final investment (seeing that film's business is almost done - Friday's collections are just about 2 crore).

On the whole, RA.ONE is a solid entertainer, no two opinions on that. It's not merely a great looking film, but also has soul, which is so essential to strike a chord with the avid moviegoer. As for the business prospects, RA.ONE is sure to shatter all previous records and set new ones, in India as well as internationally. The film will be the new yardstick for measuring success. It has Blockbuster written all over it!

The reports are good claiming Katrina Kaif'S BEST PERFORMANCE EVER.But honestly,I did not enjoy the movie much.The first half was indeed good,but seconds half dragged endlessly.Imran Khan was in his same old IHLS avtar and I feel Ali Zafar was the only saving grace in the film.Your views?

'Mummy Punjabi' - a condensed soap opera

Film: "Mummy Punjabi"; Director: Pammi Somal; Cast: Kirron Kher, Jackie Shroff, Divya Dutta and Kanwaljeet Singh; Rating: * 1/2

Today there are more soaps on television then the real soaps in people's homes. Hence, when going to watch films, audiences expect more than a melodramatic, disappointing and condensed soap opera, which is exactly what "Mummy Punjabi" is.

A Punjabi woman living in Chandigarh - Mummy (Kirron Kher) to most and Baby to a few - tries to raise her two sons and a daughter on her traditional, yet quirky values. She lets her girl loose, but puts a leash on her sons. Her children, obedient as they are, comply. Most of the times things don't go according to plan, leading to much heartburn for Mummy.

"Mummy" has its heart in the right place - it shows a clash of value systems and how a traditional woman copes with them. The problem is that its execution is not in sync with its intention. What you have thus is a long-winded, simple and caricaturised soap opera that you see on TV which has been condensed to two hours. The result is that in the relentless action in the film, there's not a second's breathing space.

This would have been all right, had it not been for a terrible script that tries to do too much. That suits director and writer Pammi Somal, who has written many soaps for serials. It, however, does not work for big screen audiences.

The only saving grace in the film is Kirron Kher, who despite very little scope in terms of the story and direction, does her best to keep the film together. It is however sad, that one of the best actress on Indian screen, a woman whose full range of talents have been exploited in masterpieces like "Khamosh Pani", is given such caricatured roles in badly directed films. Bollywood can, and should, do better for her.

Kanwaljeet Singh, as a chilled out father, and Divya Dutta as a gossipy maid do a good job too. But the rest of the cast seem straight out of a TV serial with big-screen aspirations in their eyes.

Even bit roles done by the likes of Jackie Shroff, Satish Kushik, Gurdas Mann and Rohit Roy cannot save the film that plays to the gallery in a very predictable script and execution.

This is a case of a film that perhaps should not have been made. And if it had to be made, it should have been made as a TV soap. It would have turned out to be a blockbuster then

Bodyguard Smashes All Records

Bodyguard smashed all records at the box office by collecting 38.50 crore nett in just two days on Wednesday and Thursday. It took a phenomenal initial and beat all earlier records by a distance. But the public reports are not as strong as the initial so Three Idiots or even Dabangg type lifetime business is ruled out though it will still emerge a huge grosser and amongst the top five of all time thanks to a mammoth total in its extended five day weekend.

Bodyguard Overseas Numbers: Very Good Opening

Bodyguard has opened very well in the overseas markets. The following collections are from major markets.

UAE - $1.25 million (4 days)

UK - $395,000 (3 Days)

North America - $295,000 (1 Day)

Australia - $100,000 (3 Days)

The film is looking at a $4.5-4.75 million (INR 20-21 cr) total over its extended six day weekend in the overseas market

Record opening day collection for 'Bodyguard'

The festival of Eid has once again proved to be lucky for Bollywood superstar Salman Khan whose new release "Bodyguard" has earned a record Rs.22 crore net as first day collections -- surpassing blockbusters "Dabangg" and "3 Idiots".

The action-packed drama, in which Salman has teamed up with Kareena Kapoor, was released on Eid-ul-Fitr Wednesday. His "Wanted" and "Dabangg" too released on Eid in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

"Bodyguard" has not only surpassed first day collections of "Singham" (Rs.9.1 crore), "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" (Rs.8.15 crore), "Delhi Belly" (Rs.7.15 crore), "Ready" (Rs.13.5 crore) and "Dum Maaro Dum" (Rs. 6.2 crore), it has also overtaken the box office earnings of "Dabangg" and "3 Idiots", which collected Rs 14.5 crore and Rs.13 crore, respectively, on the first day.

"The response to the film has been amazing. We had estimated the collection to be Rs.20 crore on the first day and it went on to be Rs 21.5-22 crore net, which are phenomenal figures for the first day," Priti Shahani, chief strategy and marketing officer, Reliance Entertainment, told IANS.

"Salman, no doubt, is the biggest driving factor as he has a huge fan following. A good release date is extremely crucial on the theatrical side and Salman and Eid are indeed a lethal combo," she added.

Made at an approximate budget of Rs.60 crore, the film released in India with 2,600 prints and 325 prints overseas. Shahani said they haven't yet got the figures for overseas collection.

A Hindi-remake of the Malayalam film of the same name, "Bodyguard" has been directed by Siddique and co-produced by Salman's brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri and Reliance Entertainment.

Shahani predicts that the film will cross the Rs.100-crore mark in the very first week.

"Looking at the unprecedented response to the film, 'Bodyguard' is likely to cross the Rs.100-crore mark in its first week," she said.

With an extended weekend, multiplex owners are hoping to make good business.

"The opening has been nice, the occupancy has gone up to 80 percent. People are liking the film. We are hoping for a good weekend and expect the occupancy to go up to 100 percent," said Munish, managing director (marketing) of Satyam Cineplex.

Yogesh Raizada, of Waves Cinemas calls the film a treat for Salman fans.

"It's a complete Salman Khan with lots of action and some comedy. People are enjoying the film. On the first day, the occupancy was around 80 to 90 percent in the suburbs and in the NCR region. We hope an equally good response over the weekend," he said.
