Anushka Sharma detained by Customs on her way back home

Bollywoood Gossip: Bollywood Actress Anushka Sharma was intercepted at Mumbai airport on Monday afternoon for carrying undeclared jewellery and other valuables. Anushka Sharma was on her way back from Toronto after attending the International Indian Film Academy ( IIFA) awards where she was adjudged the best actress for her hit film Band Baja Baraat. While she was trying to leave the airport via the green channel, customs officials stopped her and found undeclared jewellery in her baggage.

However, sources close to the 23-year-old Bollywood Actress said she was not being interrogated by customs and that she was carrying accessories given to her by various brands. Anushka, they said, was at the customs only to sign the formal paperwork for the borrowed accessories.

Customs officials said Anushka landed in Mumbai on an Air India flight around 2pm. While she was going through the customs’ green channel at the airport, she was stopped by assistant commissioner Sameer Wankhede and asked to open her bags.

“On examination, we found jewellery and expensive watches. Anushka Sharma was immediately ushered aside for further questioning,” said a senior customs official. “Her bag contained diamond and gold jewellery and some branded watches,” he added. Customs officials said the total value of dutiable goods was Rs 35 lakh. Officials said Anushka’s jewellery included a necklace and earrings which she may have used for the award ceremony in Toronto where she won the best actress award.

Anushka Sharma reportedly told the customs officials that she had taken the jewellery from India. “Her claim is that she had taken the jewellery from the country. However, she did not declare the jewellery to the customs before leaving, in which case she would have paid no duty at all,” said customs commissioner, P M Govande. “She has produced some jewellery bills. She has also given a letter from the watch company. We have to verify the bills,” he added.

Customs officials said if the jewellery was not from India, a duty of 36.05% of the jewellery’s worth would apply. Apart from that, the Bollywood Actress will have to pay a redemption fee to take the jewellery back. This fee can be thrice the value of the seized goods. Anushka Sharma has been booked under Sections 75, 111 L, M and D of the Customs Act for non-declaration of goods and evasion of duty.

Anushka Sharma, who was born in Bangalore, has her roots in Uttarakhand. She was launched by Yashraj Films in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She also acted in Badmaash Company and Patiala House, and earned rave reviews for her portrayal of a feisty wedding planner in Band Baaja Baraat.

This is the third such incident reported in the past two months. In May, Bollywood Actress Minissha Lamba was detained by customs on her way back from Cannes for carrying undeclared diamond jewellery worth Rs 31 lakh. Bipasha Basu too was detained briefly for undeclared accessories on which she paid the duty after arrival.

Despite medical advice and his wife Gauri’s disapproval, Shahrukh Khan performed with his injured knee at an awards ceremony in Toronto, on Saturday night.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan gave an enthralling risqué performance; so much so that after finishing his performance SRK limped out of the stage with his bloodied knees. An eye-witness said, “It was a scary sight.

The organisers had modified his steps in keeping with his injury. But Shah Rukh completely disregarded the restrictions imposed by his injury. He danced like a man possessed. But after the performance he just slumped. The highlight was his performance on the Dabangg song.” Talking about SRK’s brave performance, Shiamak Davar said, “Shah Rukh danced through his pain like a true master. He was in agony. But he still rocked the crowds. I’m so proud of him.”

Shahrukh Khan won the best leading actor award for his role in the movie My Name Is Khan.

Bollywood News: Bollywood Actress Kangana Ranaut at the Premiere of Double Dhamaal at IIFA. The IIFA Weekend festivities have kicked off with the world premiere of Double Dhamaal.

2011 has seen a flying start for Kangna as she has enjoyed the success of her film Tanu Weds Manu a romantic comedy that has become the surprise hit of the year.
