‘Zindagi Na Mile Dobara’ Movie Review

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 12:28 PM PDT

Bollywood Movie Reviews:  Hawa ke jhokon ke jaise azad hain hum,
Tum ek dariya ke jaise lehron mein behna seekho,
Har ek lamhe se tum milo khole apni baahein,
Har ek pal ek naya samaa dekhi yeh nigaahein.
Jo apni aankhon mein hairaniyaan leke chal rehe ho, to zinda ho tum.
Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho, toh zinda ho tum.

Zindagi Na Mile DobaraThese potent words from Javed Akhtar in daughter Zoya Akhtar’s second film voiced by son Farhan Akhtar‘s character of a closet poet brings the curtains down on Zindagi Na milegi Dobara. The title of the film comes from a line in the title song of Rock On!! also written by Javed Akhtar. But interestingly ‘milegi na’ there has been changed to “Na Milegi” here.

After spending two and a half hours with Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), Imran (Farhan Akhtar) and Kabir (Abhay Deol), you may understand the lines a little better and may even have your own little theory as to why those two words were swapped in the phrase. Our theory? Rock On!! was bursting with pain and anger this one’s wrapped in love. On the surface, zindagi na milegi dobara is about a bachelor holiday of three men, where each one of them has a daredevil task planned that all of them have to do. But beyond all the fun and games it’s a beautifully scripted (Zoya and Reema Kagti) journey of catharis for this trio, who are all battling some episode from their past.

Some long past, some a little recent. When you first meet Arjun, Imran and Kabir, you may find it a tad disconcerting why these 20-year-olds (college was 10 years back, someone muttered at some point) are behaving like the boys from Dil Chahta Hai. But once they are on the roads in Spain, you will start realizing these guys have actually grown up together right from their school days. And don’t we all drop our guards and turn back our clocks shamelessly or shamefully!!! with our friends from school?

Arjun was resisting it initially. He had become A Good Year’s Russell Crowe, too busy making money to dive wholeheartedly into an adventure sports trip with childhood buddies. He even has a line ditto Max Skinner: “dont say I’m on holiday!” But then what do you do when Katrina Kaif wants to hold your hand and show you the true meaning of life? She is Laila, the deep sea diving instructor who is ZNMD’s first horcrux (magic object in the world of Harry Potter, silly). The other two are Imran’s

father (Naseeruddin Shah) and Kabir’s fiancee (Kalki Koelchin). How they all add up to the soul of the film, you have to discover for your self. a Dumbledorean clue? The stunt chosen by one becomes nirvana for the other. Zoya, who made that brilliant and underseen – first film in Luck by Chance has this amazing kanack of making her actors mouth music in every line. You dont just
remember the dialogues, you remember their cadence. Also, she is fearless in the way she shoots and doesn’t hide behind over coated background scores. And that’s why most of the time she is able to latch on to a previous and raw cinematic moment. Like the drunken Doordarshan scene at the bar.

ZNMD is perhaps 15 minutes overlong, especially towards the end when the Abhay-Kalki track becomes a bit clumsy. And it also lacks the energy of Dil Chahta Hai. Perhaps it is Spain that dictates the laidback pace of the film. zoya can argue otherwise but she must have chosen the European nation because her cinematographer Carlos Calatan hails from there. He captures the cities of Barcelona, Girona, Bunol, Seville and Pamplona with so much heart, the images just take your heart away.

The film’s dialogues have been written by Farhan and he’s kept the best lines for himself!! For someone who 10 years back hand wirtten some of the funniest lines on the Bollywood screen for other actors to write crisp one liners for himself, completes a cycle in itself. Hrithik is effective as the stuck up finance broker who is completely transformed in the later half of the film. Perhaps we should stop looking for Red Bulled screen tearing performance from him every time and just enjoy his light turns. Abhay is effortlessly good as the pacifier, the man in the middle, well aware of his own life being parked on the wrong side of the road. Katrina starts out like an appraition in the film and then develops this electric chemistry with Hrithik. When those two beautiful people first share an oxygen mask and then do a ballet of sorts under water, its pure magic. Just like their kiss a few reels later.

Overall, its a good Bollywood movie teaching the essence of ‘Be alive each moment’ to its audience.

Claudia’s Firangi Item number for Bollywood

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 12:05 PM PDT

Bollywood Gossip: Already in the news for her winning the runners up in Zor ka jhatka, it was Claudia Ciesla's stint in Bigg Boss 3 that really made the German model, actress, and singer of Polish descent a household name in India.

Claudia has recently been announced as the brand ambassador of a leading alcohol company. But that is not it for Claudia, when asked about her plans in bollywood, the sexy model turned actress says, "I have been taking up dancing lessons in bolly dancing and also learning Hindi language which I just love. I am a Mumbai resident now. I think of Germany as my hometown. So now I think that I am ready to perform on the big screen. I am all set to show my talent as a dancer, and what better than an item numbers would do it".

Claudia has been doing a number of dance shows. She was recently seen sharing stage space with other bollywood stars for the National Games closing ceremony in Ranchi.  As we speak of item numbers here, we asked Claudia which of the most foot tapping item numbers she likes the best, Sheila ki jawani or Munni badnam, she laughingly says, "Both of the numbers are just brilliant but I haven't seen a sexier item then Sheila ki jawani"

Also not only that, she is learning martial art and action as well as doing meditation and Yoga. Claudia Ciesla is helping and supporting various NGOs from quite a while now. Looks like Claudia Ceisla just knows where to tap her foot to get the moment right. The interesting part is to see how much can this German beauty make in from bollywood and vice-versa.

Aamir Khan’s Delhi Belly beats Amitabh Bachchan’s Bbuddah in box office battle

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 12:45 PM PDT

Bollywood BoxOffice: You could dub it as another young versus old debate. Or you could play it as an expensive and risky film outdoing another with a lower budget. You could also bluntly call it the Amitabh-Aamir face-off. Even the suggestion of such a confrontation may be contentious to die-hard Bachchan fans, but the results of India’s rapidly changing demographics are evident at the box office.

The battle lines were drawn and the inevitability of the Amitabh-Aamir comparisons sealed when both flicks released on the same day- July 3. The crucial ‘opening’ (weekend collections), as the film trade calls it, is the yardstick for measuring success and in this case, it was even more keenly watched than usual. The Aamir Khan-produced Delhi Belly , an adult-certified comic caper, aimed at the right side of India’s population came up trumps, finishing the opening weekend with a Rs 26-crore net from domestic screens and adding another Rs 6.7 crore from overseas.
Buddah Hoga Tera Baap (BHTB), produced by AB Corp, reported a domestic weekend of Rs 7.5 crore net and an overseas weekend of Rs 2.25 crore. Within nearly a week post the release, DB has grown by Thursday to a total domestic net collection of over Rs 46 crore and an overseas collection of Rs 9.8 crore. Bbuddah, on the other hand, has collected Rs 11.5 crore net domestically and another Rs 4 crore net overseas.
The third contender — also aimed at younger viewers — Transformers-III, which released last weekend, earned Rs 12.5 crore net (opening weekend) with paid previews and 3D collections playing a big part. For Reliance Mediaworks CEO, Anil Arjun, this was an interesting week because all three releases catered to three distinct content genres. According to figures from Big Cinemas – India’s largest multiplex chain which runs 250 screens — 53% of its week’s contribution came from Delhi Belly, followed by Transformers with 18% and BHTB with 14%.
The numbers, by the way, were fiercely contested. Abhishek Bachchan got into a twitter ‘war’ with a film critic over a difference in the production numbers he gave on BHTB. He corrected it to say it was only Rs 10 crore, while the critic insisted that he had got the numbers from the Studio which co-produced the film. Meanwhile senior Bachchan put up links on his blog to a website (ibose Network .com), which reported exactly the opposite of other trade sources, claiming that DB had only opened well in certain places. Such drama is expected in Bollywood, even more so when the stakes are high.
The Big B had tweeted that if BHTB worked, he would have a solo hit after two decades. Khan conceded that he was `scared’ because of the risque content of DB, adding that he could possibly be risking everything he had built over a decade if the audience rejected the film. Of course, with some clever marketing, he cheekily included the same ‘fear’ into the pre-release promos as well!
